Where to Eat & Drink in Braidwood

Braidwood boasts many eateries and restaurants, especially for a small town with less than 2,000 residents — and each offers something unique.

If you’re after an unforgettable meal, Troopers Rest is a must-visit. A combination of top-tier dining, a relaxed atmosphere and a historic setting, it’s a place where locals and visitors alike gather for food, drinks and storytelling. “Braidwood’s heritage, strong community spirit, and connection to the land play a huge role in how we run Troopers Rest. We take pride in using high-quality, locally sourced ingredients (like premium cuts from Braidwood Butcher), and our menu is constantly evolving to showcase the best of the region,” says Gavin.

The highlights? “Some of our biggest hits so far include our perfectly cooked steaks, our large selection of seafood dishes, and our house-made sauces,” he says. For whisky lovers, Troopers Rest also boasts an impressive selection, featuring both Hold Fast Distillery spirits and other exceptional whiskies. And if you’re after great value, the $20 Monday meal specials are a local favourite. Troopers Rest also holds occasional wine pairing dinners and seasonal feasts.

Beyond Troopers Rest, The Albion and Provisions both have a strong focus on fresh, local ingredients. Whether you’re after a long brunch, a healthy lunch, or just a great cup of coffee, The Albion — located in a heritage building — always delivers. Provisions is a hybrid café and deli and a go-to for breakfast, lunch, and gourmet pantry and picnic items.

Gavin’s also a big fan of Braidwood institution, Dojo Bread: “Their sourdough is some of the best you’ll find anywhere.” If you’re looking for something on-the-go, Dojo Bread’s handmade pies and sausage rolls are hard to beat.

What to Take Home

Braidwood is home to many talented producers who make everything from artisanal foods to handcrafted goods; perfect if you want to take a piece of Braidwood with you.

For the gourmands, it’s a tough choice between the rich variety of local flavors on offer. The Braidwood Farmers Market is always brimming with small-batch honey, seasonal jams, and preserves made from the region’s freshest produce. Sweet tooths will love the handmade chocolates from Much To Do About Chocolate

If you’re visiting in winter, don’t miss the local truffle season. Grown in Braidwood’s cool climate, these truffles are known for their rich, earthy aroma. You can enjoy them at nearby truffle farms such as Elvesgate Truffle Farm, where you can join truffle hunts, demonstrations and tastings, or head to one of Braidwood’s restaurants that feature exclusive truffle menus during the season.

Some Hold Fast Distillery gin or whisky is also a must to (literally) bottle up the spirit of Braidwood. In fact, you can distil your own bottle of gin in a 3-hour workshop; they book out fast and you’ll want to reserve your spot weeks in advance.

Hold Fast Distillery was launched in 2020 by Gavin, a Navy veteran with a passion for exceptional whisky and gin: “The idea took shape during my 20 years in the Navy as a Navigation Officer, travelling the world, experiencing different cultures, and developing an appreciation for high-quality spirits. When I transitioned out of the military, I saw an opportunity to create something unique—bringing global inspiration to a locally crafted distillery in Braidwood.” The Hold Fast team are always pushing the boundaries of what Braidwood has to offer, with new spirits and limited-edition releases. You may even find Hold Fast in your local bar or bottle shop soon.

For something beyond food and drink, Gavin suggests checking out Braidwood Arts & General, a beautifully curated space showcasing local artists, handmade crafts, and unique homewares. From ceramics and one-of-a-kind jewellery to handcrafted leather goods, it’s the perfect place to find a special keepsake. But if you’re after something truly iconic, you can’t go past an Akubra hat, a symbol of Australian heritage and durability. With plenty of stores in town stocking them, you’re sure to find the perfect fit.
