Queanbeyan’s Makers: Delizia Naturally

In a close-knit community like Queanbeyan, creativity and craftsmanship thrive, supported by strong local connections and a shared appreciation for quality and sustainability.

Delizia Costa was born and bred in Queanbeyan by her parents who had emigrated from Italy. Though she has moved interstate for studies and work, she has returned home to her roots. Queanbeyan is home to her — and now to her business as well; Delizia Naturally® is a multigenerational soap and skincare brand making tallow-based products that are free from synthetics and additives.

As a custodian of her ancestors’ knowledge, Delizia has ensured that Delizia Naturally® is underlined by Italian tradition: “My family blended large quantities of lard, used olive oil and sodium carbonate. This mixture took the form of soap. Families would gather together in the village and make the soap collectively. The soap was then left to cure and then shared throughout the village for those who contributed to the production.”

With innovation and creativity, Delizia has extended her product range to include purpose-built formulations like a coconut-oil based soap that works in saltwater; a repurposed cooking oil-based soap that’s high in glycerin so it can cut through grime and grease without drying out your hands, and essential oil-free moisturisers for sensitive skin.

Equally as strong as the familial roots are the connections to the Queanbeyan community and commitment to sustainability. With a focus on zero waste, Delizia manufactures everything locally: “The used cooking oil and spent coffee grounds are sourced from local cafes in Queanbeyan.”

When asked why Delizia believes Queanbeyan has a flourishing creators and makers scene, she shares, “Even as Queanbeyan grows, we still have a small-town community feel. I try to encourage and hold onto the community spirit, and buy local to support the local economy.” Delizia is always looking for more like-minded businesses to stock her products.

Looking ahead, Delizia plans on expanding her product range by introducing laundry powder and other household cleaners, based on the same sustainable methods of repurposing used products and zero waste.

Delizia Naturally products can be purchased online or locally from a selection of stockists on Queanbeyan’s Monaro and Crawford Street. Of note are the eateries, Thirty4 Cafe & Restaurant and PRONTO where you can enjoy fresh, delicious meals in relaxed surroundings, as well as Queanbeyan Health Food.
